Pritzker Military Library

Kenneth Clarke of the Pritzker Military Library
Wednesday, April 25, 2012, Noon
The University Club, Chicago, Illinois

The Mission of the Pritzker Military Library is to acquire and maintain an accessible collection of materials and develop appropriate programs focusing on the Citizen Soldier in the preservation of democracy.

Why a Military Library?

Colonel (IL) J.N. Pritzker, IL ARNG (Retired), founder of the Pritzker Military Library, assembled a major collection of books and related materials on military history, with a particular focus on the concept of the Citizen Soldier in America. Today, building upon that foundation through the generosity of private donors, the Pritzker Military Library has become a non-partisan research library that attempts to increase the public understanding of military history and the sacrifices made by the men and women who have served.

In a democratic society, it is important for people of all viewpoints to have an open forum to discuss the past, present, and future of the military. Through its collection and its programs, the Library is dedicated to serving as a forum for those discussions and preserving them for future generations. Since opening in 2003, the Library has hosted over 300 events featuring the country's most acclaimed authors, historians, journalists, and scholars.

Consisting of over 36,000 volumes, the Pritzker Military Library's book collection is made up of titles spanning all periods of history, countries, cultures/peoples, and branches of the United States military services. Materials and resources focus on the concept of the Citizen Soldier as an essential element for the preservation of democracy.

The concentration of military history titles is primarily 19th and 20th century works. Though the majority are non-fiction, the collection includes some fiction with military and political themes. The professional staff can assist with research and enjoyment of the Library in the selection of casual reading.

Ken Clarke has worked for several organizations over the past 15 years Including the Aquarium, Ohio State University and the Poetry Center of Chicago with expertise in development, marketing and executive leadership. He joined the Library in 2010.
