World Business Chicago's objective is to foster the Chicago region's global position as a thriving business location. It is to enhance Chicago's economy through the growth of the private sector, building the best city in the world in which to live, work and play. It is a public/private partnership funded jointly by the City of Chicago and the private sector. Rita Athas is the Executive Director, coming to World Business Chicago in 2007 after serving as Mayor Daley's Deputy Chief of Staff for External Affairs for ten years. In that position she was the Mayor's liaison to regional mayors, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the business community and foundations. She has a long history with local government, having served in various positions with a number of suburban municipalities. Prior to joining the City staff she served as the Executive Director of The Northwest Municipal Conference, consortium of forty municipalities representing a population of over one million. World Business Chicago counts among its' recent triumphs MillerCoors' decision to locate its' offices in Chicago. MillerCoors is a joint venture between SABMiller, TLC and MolsonCoors. The headquarters are projected to bring three hundred to four hundred executive management jobs to Chicago beginning in June 2009. Another success story is the expansion of Tempel Steel in Chicago. The Mayor and Vincent Buonanno, Chairman and CEO of Tempel Steel announced the expansion of their plant, which will bring three hundred fifty more jobs to Chicago. Vincent Buonanno spoke to the Economic Development Council a few years ago concerning how to be an international player while based in Chicago.
