"The
Economy in an Unpredictable Time" Mr. Barnhart was the financial markets columnist for the Chicago Tribune for fifteen years. His daily column "Market Report" summarized stock action, bond and currency markets and provided insights into stocks on Chicago-area companies. He provided daily reports on CLTV, the Tribune owned cable television news channel, and appeared as a regular commentator on "Nightly Business Report" appearing nation-wide on PBS. Previously he was associate financial editor for the Tribune and he produced the daily Business section. Before joining the Tribune in 1979, Barnhart worked as a business reporter with the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Daily News. His work has been recognized in awards by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He is co-author of Kerner: The Conflict of Intangible Rights, the first biography of former Illinois Governor Otto Kerner. His biography of U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens is to be published in the near future. He is past president of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, a 3,400 member organization. The luncheon is at noon, at The Tower Club, 39th floor, 20 North Wacker Drive, Chicago.
