"The
Modern Wing and its Impact on the Art Institute" This summer marked the opening of the largest expansion in the Art Institute's history, the Modern Wing. The Modern Wing, a 264,000 square foot addition, is the new home for the museum's 20th and 21st century art collection. Taking nearly a decade in planning and construction, it makes the Art Institute the second largest art museum in the United States and thus ensures Chicago's reputation as a center for the arts in this century. Not only does the Wing house a renowned collection, but its breathtaking Nichols Bridgeway links Millennium Park (now the largest tourist attraction in Illinois) to create a thoroughfare of vibrant ambience and stature along South Michigan Avenue. Both the Modern Wing and the bridge were designed by the foremost museum architect of our time, Renzo Piano, winner of the Pritzker Prize in architecture. What does the Art Institute mean to Economic Development in Chicago? Join us to hear Meredith Mack, Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Art Institute discuss The Modern Wing and its Impact on the Art Institute. Ms. Mack was directly involved in the design, construction and management of the Modern Wing project. She also manages all building operations and security for the Museum, as well as oversees finance, auxiliary operations, protection services and the entire physical plant. Get the inside story from the person in charge of creating this lasting testament to the cultural and civic life of our city. The luncheon is a noon, at the Tower Club, 39th floor, 20 North Wacker Drive, Chicago. The cost of the lunch and program is $35 for EDC members and $50 for non-members.
